Chapter 9: My Father’s Final Protection

I stared at the document on Attorney Miller’s screen.

*The Original Inheritance Dispute.*

The title alone made my hands go cold.

For years, I had believed my father’s death had ended all family conflicts.

I thought the arguments.

The resentment.

The tension.

All of it had disappeared when he was gone.

I was wrong.

It had only gone underground.

“What is this?””

Attorney Miller leaned back.

“Your father and your uncle, Richard Bennett, had a legal dispute almost thirty years ago.””

“About what?””

He opened the file.

“The family business.””

I frowned.

“My father and Richard worked together?””

“Yes.””

I knew my father had built a successful company before selling his share and moving into a quieter life.

But I never knew the details.

“My father never talked about this.””

Attorney Miller nodded.

“That was intentional.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because your father believed the conflict was over.””

I stared at the document.

“But it wasn’t.””

“No.””

Attorney Miller scrolled.

“Your grandfather left ownership rights divided between your father and Richard. Your father discovered that Richard had been secretly moving company funds.””

My eyes widened.

“Stealing?””

Attorney Miller chose his words carefully.

“There were accusations of financial misconduct.””

“What happened?””

“Your father reported it.””

I understood immediately.

“Richard blamed him.””

“Yes.””

My uncle lost everything.

His reputation.

His position.

His money.

And he spent decades believing my father was responsible.

“But what does this have to do with me?””

Attorney Miller looked at the trust papers.

“Your father didn’t just protect his assets.””

He paused.

“He protected evidence.””

I felt a chill.

“What evidence?””

“Proof of what Richard did.””

I looked at the documents.

“He wanted to use the trust to force you to reveal it.””

Attorney Miller nodded.

“Exactly.””

I stood.

“So Wendy, Ethan, Marcus…”

“They were tools.””

The word hit hard.

Not because it was surprising.

Because it was true.

My wife.

My brother.

My best friend.

They weren’t working together because they cared about the house.

They were being used by someone who had been waiting for years.

When I returned to the hotel, my mother was sitting by the window.

She looked peaceful.

But I knew better now.

Peace didn’t mean someone wasn’t hurting.

It sometimes meant they were tired of fighting.

I sat beside her.

“Mom.””

She turned.

“Did you find out?””

I nodded.

“About Dad?””

Her expression changed.

She knew.

“You knew about Richard.””

She looked down.

“Some of it.””

“How much?””

She took a breath.

“Your father told me before he died.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because he made me promise.””

I frowned.

“He made you promise?””

She nodded.

“He said if Richard ever came after you, I should only tell you when you were ready.””

I looked away.

“Ready?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

My mother looked at me.

“To see people for who they really are.””

That sentence hurt.

Because I finally understood.

My father had known.

He knew people could betray you.

He knew money could reveal hidden sides of people.

He knew one day someone might come for what he left behind.

But he never expected the people attacking me would be the ones I loved.

The next morning, Attorney Miller arranged a meeting.

Not with Wendy.

Not with Ethan.

With Richard.

My uncle.

The man behind everything.

When he entered the office, I almost didn’t recognize him.

He was older.

Gray hair.

A carefully tailored suit.

A face that looked calm.

Too calm.

He smiled when he saw me.

“Luca.””

I stared at him.

“You know who I am.””

He laughed softly.

“Of course.””

“Then you know why I’m here.””

He sat down.

“Because you discovered the truth.””

I felt anger rise.

“You used my wife.””

“I gave her an opportunity.””

“You manipulated her.””

Richard shrugged.

“Everyone has a price.””

The words disgusted me.

“She hurt my mother.””

For the first time, his expression changed slightly.

“Your mother was never part of the plan.””

I leaned forward.

“She was a person.””

He looked at me.

“A person standing between me and what belonged to me.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not hidden.

Not disguised.

He believed everything was an object.

A possession.

“My father beat you because he was right.””

Richard’s eyes sharpened.

“Be careful.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You spent decades blaming him because he exposed you.””

His jaw tightened.

“You know nothing about what happened.””

“I know enough.””

I placed a folder on the table.

Inside were copies of everything.

“The recordings.””

His eyes moved.

“The transfer documents.””

His expression changed.

“The payments.””

Silence.

I continued.

“You thought everyone around me could be bought.””

Richard leaned back.

“You sound just like your father.””

I stared at him.

“That’s the first compliment you’ve ever given me.””

His smile disappeared.

The meeting ended after thirty minutes.

Richard left without admitting anything.

But he didn’t need to.

His confidence was gone.

Attorney Miller watched him leave.

“He knows we have enough to investigate.””

I nodded.

“But not enough to prove everything.””

“Not yet.””

That bothered me.

Because Richard was careful.

He had spent decades planning.

He didn’t leave obvious evidence.

Then my phone rang.

My mother.

I answered immediately.

“Mom?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Luca.””

I stood.

“What happened?””

“I’m at the hotel.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Her voice became quieter.

“Someone came here.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

“Are you safe?””

“Yes.””

“Did they hurt you?””

“No.””

I grabbed my keys.

“What did they want?””

A pause.

Then:

“They left something.””

My grip tightened.

“What?””

“A letter.””

“From who?””

My mother’s voice trembled.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Mom, Dad has been gone for years.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

She whispered:

“Because it has today’s date.””

I arrived at the hotel ten minutes later.

My mother handed me the envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

My father’s handwriting.

But this time, something was different.

The paper was new.

Fresh.

Not old.

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Only a few lines.

*Luca, if this letter reaches you, then they found the first protection.*

I stopped breathing.

I kept reading.

*The people attacking you are not searching for money. They are searching for what I hid.*

My hands shook.

The next line made my heart race.

*The truth about Richard is only the beginning.*

I looked at my mother.

She looked terrified.

I read the final sentence.

*Do not trust anyone who tells you they are helping you. The person closest to the enemy is still inside your life.*

I lowered the paper.

No one spoke.

Because suddenly, every assumption I had made collapsed.

Richard was not the only threat.

Wendy wasn’t the only betrayal.

Someone else was still close.

Someone who knew my every move.

Someone who had been helping us uncover the truth.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Attorney Miller.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*“Luca, I need you to leave the hotel immediately. I found something about the person who sent you the first recordings.””*

I stared at the message.

Then another one appeared.

A photo attachment.

My blood ran cold.

May you like

Because the person standing beside my mother in the picture…

Was someone I trusted.
