Chapter 6

Karen made bail.
The court ordered her to stay away from Mia.
She violated it in less than a day.
Not by coming to the house.
By sending a video.
It came from an unknown number.
Karen stood in a room I did not recognize, one hand on her stomach.
Her face was pale.
Her voice soft.
“Daniel, I know you’re angry. But Mia needs a mother. Our baby needs a father. Don’t let Rachel poison you.”
I sent it to Mara.
Then another message arrived.
A photo of Mia sleeping from weeks ago.
Taken inside our house.
Caption:
She misses me.
My blood ran cold.
Mia had been sleeping in her bed when that photo was taken.
Karen had stood over her.
After everything.
After the cabinet.
After the bruises.
She had taken pictures like Mia was property.
Officer Harris took the violation seriously.
Karen was arrested again.
This time, bail was harder.
The pregnancy became public.
So did the videos.
The local news called it “stepmother abuse case.”
I hated that phrase.
It sounded too clean.
Too small.
Like the cabinet was just a detail instead of a place my daughter learned terror.
Karen’s lawyer claimed postpartum hormonal instability.
Mara corrected him in court.
“She is not postpartum. She is pregnant. And the abuse predates the pregnancy.”
The judge extended the protective order.
Then ordered Karen to surrender all keys, devices, and access codes.
That was when we found the app.
Karen had installed cameras in Mia’s room.
Not for safety.
For control.
She watched her when I was away.
She knew when Mia cried.
Knew when she got out of bed.
Knew when Rachel visited.
I sat in the police station, staring at the evidence list.

My house had not been a home.
It had been a cage with Wi-Fi.
