Chapter 1: Two Years of Sacrifice
Tasha had spent two years building something that belonged entirely to her.
Not a relationship.
Not a friendship.
Not a dream someone else could take credit for.
A gaming PC.
Every component inside that black tower represented hours of work, missed outings, and small sacrifices nobody in her family had ever bothered to notice.
At seventeen, Tasha worked part-time after school and on weekends.
While other teenagers spent their paychecks on clothes, makeup, and fast food, she tucked hers away in a savings envelope hidden inside her dresser.
Her goal was simple.
Build the gaming PC she had dreamed about since she was twelve.
And when she finally finished it, the total cost came to exactly $2,000.
She had researched every component herself.
The graphics card.
The processor.
The cooling system.
The custom case with its glowing RGB lights.
She assembled everything carefully, following tutorials late into the night, double-checking every connection because she was terrified of damaging something she had worked so hard to afford.
When she pressed the power button for the first time, the fans spun to life.
Blue and purple lights illuminated her bedroom.
Tasha covered her mouth, laughing and crying at the same time.
“It's beautiful,” she whispered.
Her father, James, appeared in the doorway.
He looked at the glowing tower, then at his daughter.
“You built all that yourself?””
Tasha nodded proudly.
“Every single piece.””
James smiled.
“Then you should be proud of yourself, kiddo.””
Those words meant more to her than he realized.
James had always encouraged her to work for what she wanted.
He wasn't wealthy, but he believed money meant more when you understood the effort required to earn it.
He had taught Tasha that responsibility mattered, that other people's belongings deserved respect, and that being part of a family didn't give anyone permission to take advantage of someone else.
Unfortunately, his stepson, Devon, had learned a very different lesson.
Devon was nineteen, two years older than Tasha, and had been living with James and Tasha for nearly a year.
He was charming when he wanted something.
Funny when people were watching.
And incredibly skilled at making his problems sound like everybody else's responsibility.
He had no steady job.
He frequently borrowed money and forgot to repay it.
He left dishes in the living room, clothes on the stairs, and empty food containers wherever he happened to finish eating.
Whenever James confronted him, Devon had the same answer.
“Relax, Dad. I'll handle it.””
He rarely did.
At first, Tasha tried to get along with him.
She invited him to watch her play games.
She explained how the components worked.
Once, she even let him use the computer while she sat beside him, carefully explaining which settings he could change.
Devon seemed impressed.
“Two grand for a computer?”” he asked.
“About that,” Tasha replied.
He whistled.
“Must be nice.””
Tasha shrugged.
“I saved for two years.””
Devon laughed as if she had told him a joke.
“That's crazy. I'd never waste that much time saving for anything.””
“Then you wouldn't have one.””
His smile faded.
For a moment, Tasha thought he might actually consider what she'd said.
Instead, he leaned back in her gaming chair and grinned.
“Whatever. When you have money, you should enjoy it.””
Tasha asked him to get out of her chair.
He did, but not before spinning around once more.
From that day forward, Devon began making comments about her computer.
He called it her expensive toy.
He joked that she cared more about electronics than people.
Whenever she refused to let him use it without permission, he accused her of being selfish.
“It's not like you're using it every second,” he complained one evening.
“It's mine,” Tasha answered.
“And we're family.””
“That's not the same thing.””
Devon rolled his eyes.
“Whatever, Tasha.””
She thought that was the end of it.
She was wrong.
Because while Tasha was busy saving money for her next upgrade, Devon was busy looking for a shortcut to something he wanted.
And soon, he would decide that her two years of hard work were worth less than a few hours of entertainment.
Neither Tasha nor James knew that Devon had already started looking into local pawnshops.
Or that he had discovered exactly how much someone might pay for a high-end gaming computer.
Most importantly, neither of them knew that Devon had a concert coming up.
A concert featuring an artist he desperately wanted to see.
The tickets were expensive.
The VIP package was even more expensive.
And Devon had absolutely no intention of paying for it with money he had earned himself.

He had another plan.
A plan that would turn Tasha's proudest achievement into the worst betrayal she had ever experienced.
