Chapter 5: The Betrayal Hidden In The Numbers
I read the message three times before my mind accepted the words.
*He wasn’t only hiding Renata from you.*
*He was preparing to take everything from you.*
The hotel hallway suddenly felt colder.
The noise from the ballroom disappeared behind the closed doors.
For years, I had suspected Alejandro was capable of many things.
Pride.
Arrogance.
Cruelty.
But I never wanted to believe he would cross a line that could not be uncrossed.
Not after ten years.
Not after everything we built.
My fingers hovered over the screen.
I typed back.
*What did he do?*
The reply came almost instantly.
*Meet me at the office. Bring the original documents. Do not tell Alejandro.*
I stared at the message.
Then I looked back through the glass doors of the ballroom.
Inside, Alejandro was still standing there.
Still trying to understand how the world he controlled had suddenly stopped obeying him.
For the first time in years, he looked small.
But I knew better than anyone.
A wounded man with power was more dangerous than a confident one.
I walked away.
Not because I hated him.
Because I finally understood I had to protect myself.
The drive home was quiet.
Too quiet.
The city lights moved across the windshield as I sat in the back seat of the car my driver had arranged.
I watched strangers walking on sidewalks.
Couples holding hands.
Families laughing outside restaurants.
Normal lives.
Simple lives.
I wondered when mine had become a performance.
When had my marriage stopped being a partnership and become a carefully staged image?
My phone rang.
I almost ignored it.
Then I saw the name.
Alejandro.
I answered.
“Hello.””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
That was unusual.
Alejandro always had something to say.
An accusation.
A demand.
An order.
But now he was quiet.
“Where are you?””
His voice was controlled.
Too controlled.
“Going home.””
“You mean the mansion?””
I closed my eyes.
Even now.
Even after everything.
He still said it like it belonged to him.
“No.””
I looked out the window.
“Mine.””
A long pause.
Then:
“You’re enjoying this.””
I almost laughed.
“Enjoying what?””
“Seeing me lose control.””
I shook my head.
“You still think this is about you.””
His breathing changed.
“What else could it be about?””
I answered honestly.
“The fact that I spent ten years loving someone who never bothered to know me.””
Silence.
For a moment, I thought he might say something real.
Something honest.
Instead, he said:
“You embarrassed me tonight.””
I looked at the city outside.
Not surprised.
Just tired.
“You still don’t understand.””
“What?””
“You’re not upset because I embarrassed you.””
My voice became quieter.
“You’re upset because everyone finally saw what I already knew.””
“And what is that?””
I answered:
“That you only feel powerful when someone else feels small.””
The call went silent.
Then he hung up.
The next morning, I arrived at the Grupo Altavista headquarters before sunrise.
The building had always fascinated me.
Forty floors of glass and steel.
A symbol of success.
A symbol of Alejandro Salgado.
At least that was what everyone believed.
The receptionist immediately stood.
“Mrs. Salgado.””
I smiled slightly.
“Good morning, Elena.””
Her eyes moved to my face.
She noticed.
Of course she noticed.
The entire company probably knew by now.
News traveled faster than emails.
“Are you alright?””
It was such a simple question.
But after everything, it almost surprised me.
“Yes.””
I answered.
And for the first time in a long time, it was true.
The elevator doors opened.
I stepped inside.
And went to the floor where everything started.
The executive offices.
The place where Alejandro spent years telling people he created an empire.
My attorney, Daniel Herrera, was waiting outside the conference room.
He was one of the few people who knew the complete story.
Not because I told him everything.
Because he had helped me protect it.
“You came alone?””
I nodded.
“Where is Alejandro?””
“On his way.””
Daniel handed me a folder.
“You need to see this before he arrives.””
I opened it.
The first page was a financial report.
The second was a list of transactions.
The third page made my hands stop.
A transfer.
A large one.
I looked up.
“When?””
“Four months ago.””
I stared at the document.
Four months.
The same time Alejandro started becoming distant.
The same time Renata appeared more often.
The same time he began telling me I was “not understanding his world.””
“What was he doing?””
Daniel sat down.
“Moving company funds.””
I looked at him.
“How much?””
He hesitated.
“Enough to create a separate financial safety net.””
My stomach tightened.
“For himself?””
Daniel nodded.
“And Renata.””
The room felt suddenly smaller.
I turned another page.
There were payments.
Luxury hotels.
Jewelry.
Private accounts.
Properties being investigated.
All connected to one name.
Renata Cárdenas.
I whispered:
“He was planning to leave.””
Daniel looked at me.
“More than that.””
He pushed another document toward me.
“He was planning to make sure you left with nothing.””
I looked down.
A divorce preparation file.
Prepared by Alejandro’s lawyers.
Arguments.
Claims.
Strategies.
Everything designed to portray me as dependent.
Unimportant.
A woman who had contributed nothing.
A woman who deserved nothing.
My hands tightened around the papers.
“He was going to say I had no role in the company.””
“Yes.””
“He was going to take the house.””
“Yes.””
“He was going to erase everything.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The documents answered for him.
For ten years, I had protected Alejandro.
And he had spent months preparing to destroy me.
The door opened.
We both looked up.
Alejandro walked in.
He was wearing a perfect suit.
The same kind he wore every day.
The same kind that convinced people he had everything under control.
But his eyes were different.
He looked exhausted.
He looked like he had not slept.
“Valeria.””
I said nothing.
His eyes moved to the documents.
Then to Daniel.
Then back to me.
“You went through my files.””
I stared at him.
“Your files?””
His expression hardened.
“Yes.””
I slowly placed the documents on the table.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“I spent ten years helping build this company.””
I pointed at the papers.
“And you call the truth about it your files.””
His jaw tightened.
Daniel stood.
“Mr. Salgado, we should discuss this professionally.””
Alejandro ignored him.
“You are trying to destroy my reputation.””
“No.””
I looked directly at him.
“I am showing people the reputation you created.””
He walked closer.
“You think you can take everything from me?””
I shook my head.
“I never wanted anything from you.””
That hurt him.
I could see it.
Because deep down, he knew it was true.
I never chased his money.
I never wanted his name.
I wanted his loyalty.
His respect.
His honesty.
Things he had considered worthless.
“You could have told me,” he said.
I looked at him.
“About what?””
“About who you were.””
I smiled sadly.
“I spent ten years showing you.””
His face changed.
“But you were too busy looking at what I didn’t have.””
The door opened again.
This time, several board members entered.
Men and women who had worked with Alejandro for years.
People who once celebrated him.
Now they looked serious.
The oldest board member placed a folder on the table.
“Mr. Salgado.””
Alejandro straightened.
“Yes?””
The man looked at him.
“We need answers.””
Alejandro glanced at me.
“About what?””
The board member opened the folder.
“About the company shares.””
Alejandro frowned.
“What about them?””
The man placed a document in front of him.
“Because according to these records, the controlling ownership of Grupo Altavista was never transferred to you.””
Alejandro froze.
The room became silent.
The board member continued:
“The majority voting rights still belong to the original trust.””
Alejandro looked confused.
“Impossible.””
The man shook his head.
“No.””
He looked toward me.
“It was simply hidden from you.””
Alejandro turned slowly.
“Valeria…”
I met his eyes.
And this time, I didn’t look away.
Because he was finally about to learn the truth.
The company he claimed to own.
The empire he bragged about.
The success he used to humiliate me.
Had always belonged to the person he thought was standing behind him.
May you like
And the worst part for Alejandro?
He had signed the documents himself.
