Chapter 2: The People Behind the Wedding
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Patricia Bennett.
The woman who had helped me choose my wedding dress.
The woman who had cried during our engagement party.
The woman who had stood beside me at my mother's memorial and told me she would always treat me like a daughter.
She was listed as a beneficiary of the company Ethan intended to fund with a loan secured by my identity.
"How much?"" I finally asked.
Daniel sighed.
"According to the corporate filings, Patricia owns thirty percent of Hale Hospitality Group through a separate holding company.""
My father swore under his breath.
Rachel sat motionless.
I pressed the phone closer to my ear.
"Why would she be involved?""
"That's what we're trying to establish. But I found something else.""
"What?""
"The company has substantial outstanding debt. It appears they've been moving money between related businesses for some time.""
"Are you saying they're insolvent?""
"I'm saying the company is in serious financial trouble. If the loan had gone through, you could have been exposed to a very large liability.""
My throat tightened.
"And my property?""
"Your building appears to have been included as proposed collateral in a preliminary refinancing package. Since you haven't signed the documents, that transaction isn't complete.""
I closed my eyes.
The building.
My mother's building.
The one place Ethan had never managed to turn into something about himself.
"Daniel, I never authorized any of this.""
"I know. We have the original records. Preserve everything. I'll send you the next steps in writing.""
"Can I report the forged signature?""
"Yes. We'll discuss the appropriate reports and contact the bank's fraud department. But don't make any threats or accusations directly to Ethan tonight.""
I looked toward the door.
"I don't intend to.""
Daniel hesitated.
"One more thing, Claire.""
"What?""
"Your wedding vendors. Do you have copies of the payment records?""
"Every invoice.""
"Keep them. Especially anything paid through the joint wedding account.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because I found several transfers from that account to a company called MHB Events.""
My heart stopped.
"What company?""
"MHB Events. Registered under Madison Hale's name.""
I stared at the wall.
"How much?""
"Thirty-two thousand, six hundred dollars.""
Rachel stood.
"What?""
I repeated the amount.
My father took the phone from my hand.
"Daniel, this is Robert Bennett. Are you telling us someone took money from the wedding account?""
"That's what the statements suggest, sir. We need to verify the transactions, but the records show repeated payments to MHB Events.""
My father looked at me.
"Claire, did you authorize those?""
"No.""
Rachel grabbed her phone.
"Then we need to look at every payment.""
I nodded.
After ending the call, I opened my banking app again.
The wedding account was something Ethan and I had created eight months earlier.
We had each agreed to contribute toward the ceremony.
I had deposited most of the money because my income was significantly higher than his.
Ethan had insisted on managing the account.
He said it would be easier if one person handled the payments.
I had agreed because I was busy coordinating the venue, catering, flowers, and guest arrangements.
Now I opened the transaction history.
The first suspicious transfer was dated July 18.
$4,500.
The second was August 2.
$7,200.
Then $9,800.
Then $11,100.
The descriptions were vague.
Consulting.
Event services.
Vendor deposit.
But every payment went to the same recipient.
MHB Events.
Rachel pulled a chair beside me.
"How much is left?""
I showed her.
"Twenty-seven thousand.""
She stared at the screen.
"Claire, you put almost sixty thousand into this account.""
"I know.""
"And he transferred thirty-two thousand to Madison?""
"Apparently.""
My father paced across the room.
"I want to find him.""
"Please don't.""
"Your mother would never have tolerated this.""
That sentence nearly broke me.
My mother had adored Ethan.
When he first proposed, she had been the one who cried hardest.
She had told me that a good marriage required patience, compromise, and forgiveness.
But she had also taught me something else.
Never give someone access to what they would destroy if they stopped loving you.
I looked at the overnight bag.
"I think she would have wanted me to leave.""
My father stopped pacing.
Then he placed a hand on my shoulder.
"She would have wanted you safe.""
A knock interrupted us.
Rachel immediately moved between me and the door.
"Who is it?""
"Hotel security, ma'am. Mr. Bennett has requested access to the bridal suite.""
I frowned.
"Ethan?""
"Yes, ma'am.""
Rachel looked at me.
"Absolutely not.""
I approached the door but didn't open it.
"Please tell him I'm not available.""
There was a pause.
Then the security employee spoke again.
"He's saying he needs to retrieve some personal belongings.""
I looked at the room.
Ethan had no belongings here.
His tuxedo was downstairs.
His phone and wallet were with him.
The only things in the bridal suite belonged to me.
"Tell him to put his request in writing.""
I heard footsteps retreating.
Then my phone rang.
Ethan.
I declined it.
A moment later, a voice message arrived.
I played it on speaker.
"Claire, enough. This has gone too far. You're embarrassing my mother, and you're making Madison look like some kind of criminal. We need to talk like adults.""
A second message followed.
"Listen, I know you're upset about the ring. It was a joke. You know how I am. Come downstairs, and we'll explain everything to the guests.""
Then a third.
His voice was quieter.
"Don't make me regret choosing you.""
Rachel's expression turned furious.
"Choosing you? He's acting like you're lucky he didn't marry Madison.""
I saved the messages.
Then I opened the email Daniel had forwarded.
There was a preliminary ownership report attached.
I scrolled through the corporate structure.
Hale Hospitality Group.
MHB Holdings.
MHB Events.
And then a company I didn't recognize.
Bennett Property Solutions.
My father leaned over my shoulder.
"That's my last name.""
I nodded.
"Patricia's company.""
"Why is it called Bennett Property Solutions?""
I didn't know.
I opened the corporate filing.
The registered address was a commercial office in downtown Chicago.
The listed directors were Patricia Bennett and Madison Hale.
But the company's principal asset was a property listed at an address I recognized.
My building.
I read the entry again.
Then again.
"That's impossible.""
Rachel looked at the screen.
"What?""
"There's a property transfer recorded here.""
My father took the laptop.
"To whom?""
I pointed.
The document referenced a proposed transfer of beneficial interest in the building.
Not a completed sale.
Not yet.
But someone had already prepared the paperwork.
And the date was three months earlier.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"Three months ago, Ethan asked me to sign something for the property insurance.""
Rachel went still.
"What did you sign?""
"A routine authorization. He said the insurance company needed updated information because we were planning to renovate one of the apartments.""
My father stared at me.
"Did you read it?""
"I thought I did.""
I opened the scanned document attached to the filing.
The first page looked familiar.
My name.
My address.
The insurance policy number.
But the second page contained a section I had never seen.
An authorization allowing an agent to negotiate the transfer of certain property interests.
The signature at the bottom resembled mine.
I leaned closer.
It wasn't my handwriting.
Again.
"Claire," Rachel whispered.
I felt sick.
"They've been planning this for months.""
My father immediately called Daniel back.
While he spoke, I continued examining the records.
One document referenced a scheduled meeting at the bank.
November 3.
Today.
The date of my wedding.
The meeting time was listed as 8:30 p.m.
I checked the clock.
7:46 p.m.
The wedding was supposed to have ended by eight.
And I suddenly understood why Ethan had insisted on the ceremony taking place at the Fairmont.
Why he had asked me to keep the evening schedule flexible.
Why he had arranged for Patricia to handle the family paperwork.
Why he had repeatedly told me that after the ceremony, everything would finally become official.
They hadn't merely expected me to marry Ethan.
They had expected me to sign away control of my financial future before I realized what was happening.
My phone rang again.
This time, it was Madison.
I almost declined it.
Then I remembered Daniel's advice.
Preserve every communication.
I answered.
"Hello?""
For a moment, there was only breathing.
Then Madison spoke.
"Claire, we need to talk.""
Her voice was different from the one she had used downstairs.
No laughter.
No smugness.
Just tension.
"About what?""
"About the wedding.""
I looked at Rachel.
"The wedding is over.""
"Don't be ridiculous.""
I almost smiled.
"That's interesting coming from the woman wearing my engagement ring.""
Madison exhaled sharply.
"Ethan shouldn't have done that.""
"Yet you accepted it.""
"It was supposed to make you react.""
"Why?""
She didn't answer.
I walked toward the window.
Below us, the Chicago streets glittered with traffic. The city continued as if nothing had happened.
"Madison, why did you need me to react?""
Her voice lowered.
"Because Ethan said you were getting suspicious.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Suspicious about what?""
Another pause.
Then she said, "The bank.""
I glanced at Rachel.
"What about the bank?""
"Claire, you don't understand. There's a deadline tonight.""
"For what?""
"Everything.""
I felt a cold sensation spread through my chest.
"Everything?""
"Ethan said if you signed the final documents, none of this would become a problem.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you know he used my signature?""
Silence.
"Madison?""
"I didn't do that.""
"Did you know?""
She sighed.
Then she said something that changed the conversation completely.
"Patricia told us you had already agreed.""
I stared at the city.
"Agreed to what?""
"To putting the building into the holding company.""
My father's conversation with Daniel stopped.
Rachel's mouth fell open.
I spoke slowly.
"I never agreed to that.""
Madison's voice trembled.
"That's not what Ethan told us.""
"Then Ethan lied to you.""
She was silent.
I could hear something moving in the background.
A car door, perhaps.
Then Madison whispered:
"Claire, please don't go to the police.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why?""
"Because if they investigate the company, they'll find out what happened to the other money.""
"What other money?""
She inhaled shakily.
Then the line went dead.
I looked at my phone.
Before I could call her back, a notification appeared.
An email from the bank.
*URGENT: Your scheduled authorization appointment has been canceled.*
I opened it.
The cancellation had been submitted by someone else.
The name was listed beneath the confirmation.
*Authorized Representative: Ethan Bennett.*
May you like
And attached to the email was a document I had never seen before.
A document that claimed I had already agreed to everything.
