Chapter 10: The Baby My Sister Died Protecting

For one terrible moment, I couldn't hear anything except the blood pounding in my ears.

Olivia Carter.

The nurse who had handed us Grace's medical records.

The woman who had told us Lucas was alive when he arrived at the hospital.

The woman who had given us the handwritten note Grace left behind.

And now her photograph was supposedly found inside a house belonging to Victor Hale, holding my missing nephew.

"No," I whispered.

Sheriff Brooks grabbed his radio.

"Unit Three, secure the property. Do not touch anything else. I want a description of the woman in that photograph sent to every officer.""

My father sank into the nearest pew.

"She took him.""

I turned toward him.

"You said Victor had him.""

"I thought he did.""

Gerald picked up his briefcase.

"We need to establish whether Olivia was involved in the transfer or whether someone used her identity.""

I looked at him.

"She knew Lucas was alive. She knew the records had been changed. She knew everything.""

"Knowing something and participating in it are two different things," Gerald replied.

Sheriff Brooks turned toward me.

"Natalie, stay here with your mother. We're going to find the child.""

I shook my head.

"I'm coming.""

"This could become dangerous.""

"That is my sister's baby. I'm not sitting in another room waiting for someone to tell me he's gone.""

He studied my face.

Then he nodded.

"Stay beside me. Do not approach anyone without permission.""

My mother stood.

"I'm coming too.""

My father reached for her.

"Eleanor—"

She pulled her hand away.

"You have done enough.""

Those words silenced him.

We followed the sheriff's vehicle toward the old Hale property.

The drive took approximately twenty minutes.

Rain had started falling, tapping against the windshield as the road narrowed between fields and dark trees.

I kept looking at the photograph on my phone.

A woman in a pale blue hospital uniform.

A newborn wrapped in a white blanket.

A tiny face turned toward the camera.

I enlarged the image.

The baby's left hand was visible.

There was a small crescent-shaped birthmark near his wrist.

I remembered Grace showing me an ultrasound picture and joking that Lucas already had her hands.

I had never seen him alive.

But somehow, I recognized him.

"That's Lucas," I whispered.

My mother leaned closer.

"Are you sure?""

I nodded.

"Look at his wrist.""

She began crying.

"That's my grandson.""

When we arrived, two deputies were standing outside the house.

The front door was open.

Sheriff Brooks stepped out.

"Any sign of movement?""

"Negative, sir.""

"Vehicles?""

"One set of tire tracks heading toward the east road. They're fresh.""

The sheriff looked at Gerald.

"Can you identify the woman?""

Gerald examined the photograph.

"That's Olivia Carter.""

My mother stared at him.

"You know her?""

"I met her once when Grace was receiving medical care. She was introduced as a hospital nurse.""

Sheriff Brooks turned toward the deputies.

"Find her address. Contact the hospital. I want to know whether she is currently employed there.""

One deputy nodded.

The other approached with a plastic evidence bag.

"Sir, we found this inside the nursery.""

It contained a folded blanket.

My mother recognized it immediately.

"That's Grace's.""

She reached toward the bag.

The sheriff gently stopped her.

"Please don't touch it.""

My mother looked at the blanket.

Grace had knitted it herself.

The blue yarn was uneven in places, and one corner had a small loose thread.

I'd seen it in photographs.

I'd held it when Grace proudly brought it to our parents' house.

Now it was lying inside a house where my missing nephew had apparently been kept.

I turned toward Gerald.

"Why would Olivia take him?""

Gerald didn't answer.

Instead, he opened his briefcase.

"I believe we need to examine the guardianship agreement again.""

He placed it on the hood of the sheriff's vehicle.

The document was dated October 13.

Grace had signed it.

Travis had signed it.

But there was something beneath their signatures I hadn't noticed before.

A third section.

*Emergency Alternate Guardian: Olivia Carter.*

I stared.

"What?""

Gerald nodded.

"Your sister had named Olivia as an alternate guardian.""

My mother looked at him.

"Why would she choose a nurse?""

"Because Olivia had agreed to assist her if a medical emergency occurred.""

I shook my head.

"Then why did Grace write that she was afraid?""

Gerald pointed to the final paragraph.

"Read the conditions.""

I leaned closer.

The agreement stated that Olivia could assume temporary guardianship only if Grace became medically incapacitated and the child's father was unable or unwilling to provide safe care.

I read it twice.

"Travis had already signed this?""

"Yes.""

"Then why is Lucas missing?""

Gerald looked toward the house.

"Because the agreement may have been used to remove the child from the hospital before the proper authorities could intervene.""

Sheriff Brooks frowned.

"Are you suggesting Olivia was acting under Grace's instructions?""

"I'm suggesting we shouldn't assume she kidnapped him.""

A deputy approached.

"Sir, we have Olivia's current address.""

The sheriff looked up.

"Where?""

"An apartment near the north side of town. Her vehicle was reported leaving the area about forty minutes ago.""

"Get officers there.""

The deputy nodded.

Then another radio transmission came through.

"Sheriff, we've located a vehicle matching the description from the Hale property.""

"Where?""

"On County Road 16. Parked outside an abandoned farmhouse.""

The sheriff immediately looked at us.

"Let's go.""

We followed the officers through the rain.

The farmhouse stood behind a line of old trees.

Its windows were dark.

A single vehicle sat near the porch.

The sheriff approached with two deputies.

"Olivia Carter! This is Sheriff Brooks. We need you to come outside.""

Silence.

Then a woman's voice answered.

"I have the baby.""

My heart stopped.

"Lucas!"" I shouted.

Sheriff Brooks raised his hand.

"Natalie, stay behind me.""

The front door opened slowly.

Olivia stood in the doorway.

She was wearing a gray sweater instead of her hospital uniform.

Her eyes were swollen.

In her arms was a small bundle wrapped in a white blanket.

A tiny face emerged.

A baby's face.

My mother's knees nearly gave way.

"Oh, my God.""

Olivia held him closer.

"Please don't frighten him.""

I stepped forward.

"Is that Lucas?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

I began crying.

"Please. Please let me see him.""

Olivia looked at me.

Then at the sheriff.

"I need to know he's safe.""

Sheriff Brooks lowered his voice.

"He will be examined by medical professionals. Nobody is going to hurt him.""

Olivia slowly approached.

I could see the baby's tiny fingers moving beneath the blanket.

His eyes were closed.

His cheeks were pink.

He was alive.

My sister's son was alive.

Olivia placed him gently into my arms.

The moment his weight settled against my chest, I began sobbing.

"Hello, sweetheart.""

His little hand opened.

His fingers curled around mine.

I pressed my lips against his forehead.

"Your mommy loved you so much.""

My mother stood beside me, crying openly.

"He's beautiful.""

Sheriff Brooks asked Olivia to step aside.

She obeyed.

A paramedic arrived and began checking the baby.

His temperature was normal.

His breathing was steady.

He was small, but responsive.

"He's stable," the paramedic announced.

I nearly collapsed with relief.

Then Sheriff Brooks turned toward Olivia.

"Why did you take him?""

She looked at the baby.

"Because Grace asked me to.""

Gerald stepped forward.

"Do you have proof?""

Olivia nodded.

She reached into her sweater pocket and removed a small envelope.

"She gave me this the night before she died.""

Gerald took it.

My name was written across the front.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

Nat,

If Olivia is holding Lucas when you read this, then I need you to understand that she is not the enemy.

I chose her because I trust her.

Travis has been planning to take Lucas away from me. He believes that if something happens to me, he will control everything.

But I found out he has another reason for wanting the baby.

I stopped.

Gerald read over my shoulder.

The next paragraph was underlined.

Lucas is not biologically Travis's son.

I looked up.

The rain seemed to stop.

"What?""

My mother covered her mouth.

Gerald continued reading.

I discovered the truth through a medical test. Travis knew before I did. He has been using my pregnancy as part of a financial arrangement with Victor Hale.

I don't understand all of it, but I know the baby was valuable to them for reasons that had nothing to do with being loved.

My hands trembled.

I looked at Olivia.

"Who is Lucas's father?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Gerald continued reading.

I never told Travis that I knew the truth. I was afraid he would hurt Lucas.

Nat, there is something else. Before I married Travis, I froze several embryos after a medical procedure. I wanted to preserve the possibility of having a child someday.

I frowned.

Embryos?

My sister had never told me about that.

Gerald read the next line.

One of those embryos was used during fertility treatment after Travis and I discovered we might have difficulty conceiving naturally.

I looked at Olivia.

She nodded.

"That's correct.""

Gerald continued.

The treatment was supposed to use an embryo created from my egg and the donor sample I had selected.

My mother looked confused.

"What donor sample?""

Gerald turned the page.

There was a medical document attached.

The donor's identity had been listed under a confidential code.

But beneath it was an authorization number.

Olivia examined the page.

Then her expression changed.

"That's impossible.""

Sheriff Brooks looked at her.

"What?""

Olivia pointed to the document.

"This isn't the donor code Grace selected.""

Gerald frowned.

"Explain.""

"The clinic records I saw were different. The sample was supposed to be from an anonymous donor. This code belongs to a separate storage account.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Whose account?""

Olivia looked at the paper.

"Victor Hale.""

Nobody spoke.

My father, who had remained silent throughout the entire journey, suddenly stepped forward.

"Victor?""

Olivia nodded.

"He was listed as the source of the genetic material.""

Gerald stared at the document.

Then he looked at me.

"That means Lucas may be biologically related to Victor Hale.""

My mother sank onto the porch step.

I looked down at the baby.

The tiny boy Grace had dreamed about.

The child she had knitted blankets for.

The child she had protected even while her own life was falling apart.

"Why would Travis want him?"" I whispered.

Olivia answered.

"Because Victor had promised him money.""

Sheriff Brooks turned sharply.

"Explain.""

Olivia took a breath.

"Victor was involved in a private genetic research company. He had been funding fertility treatments through several clinics. Travis found out that Grace's pregnancy involved an embryo created using Victor's genetic material.""

Gerald's face hardened.

"Was this authorized by Grace?""

Olivia shook her head.

"Not the way it was recorded.""

She explained that someone had substituted a donor identification number during the fertility process.

Grace had believed she was using the anonymous donor sample she had selected.

But the clinic's records suggested that a different sample had been used.

The result was Lucas.

Victor's biological son.

Travis had discovered the discrepancy and realized the child could be used to obtain money from Victor.

The agreement involved a private research contract and a substantial financial payment.

Grace had found the records.

She had confronted Travis.

And he had become desperate.

"How much money?"" Sheriff Brooks asked.

Olivia looked down.

"Five million dollars.""

My mother made a broken sound.

Five million dollars.

That was what they had apparently decided my sister and her baby were worth.

Gerald turned toward Sheriff Brooks.

"This needs to be reported to the state investigators immediately.""

The sheriff nodded.

Then he looked at Olivia.

"Did you know about the plan to transfer Lucas?""

"I knew Grace was frightened. She told me to be ready to take him if something happened.""

"Why didn't you contact the authorities?""

Olivia began crying.

"Because Victor had people watching the clinic. I was afraid they'd find him before anyone could protect him.""

"Where have you kept him?""

"At the farmhouse. I arranged for another nurse to help me. I didn't tell anyone where we were.""

Sheriff Brooks looked toward the house.

"Who else knows?""

"Nobody.""

Gerald examined the letter again.

There was one final paragraph.

He read it aloud.

Nat, I know you'll wonder why I didn't tell you the whole truth. I was trying to protect you. Travis knows how much you love me. He knew you would investigate if I disappeared.

I didn't want him hurting you too.

My eyes filled.

I kissed Lucas's forehead.

"I'm here now.""

Gerald reached the bottom of the page.

There was a final sentence.

And Nat, if you ever find out who Lucas's biological father is, remember that blood doesn't make someone a parent. Love does.

I looked at the baby.

Then I looked at my mother.

For the first time since Grace died, she smiled through her tears.

"He's ours," she whispered.

Sheriff Brooks received another call.

He listened for several seconds.

Then his expression hardened.

"Understood.""

He ended the call.

"What happened?"" I asked.

"Victor Hale has been located.""

"Where?""

"At the private clinic where the embryo transfer was performed.""

Gerald looked up.

"Is he under arrest?""

"Not yet. Investigators are preparing a warrant.""

I held Lucas closer.

"Can he take the baby?""

Sheriff Brooks shook his head.

"Not while the guardianship agreement is valid and the child is under protective care.""

Olivia looked at Gerald.

"There's something else you should know.""

Gerald turned.

"What?""

"Victor didn't just arrange the embryo transfer. He paid Travis to marry Grace.""

The words seemed to freeze the air.

I stared at her.

"What?""

Olivia swallowed.

"I found the financial records in the clinic's private files. The payments began six months before the wedding.""

Gerald slowly lowered the letter.

"Why would he do that?""

Olivia looked toward Lucas.

"Because Victor wanted access to the child, and Travis needed money.""

I felt sick.

My sister hadn't simply married an unfaithful man.

She had married someone who may have entered her life as part of a financial arrangement.

A marriage built on deception.

A pregnancy manipulated by strangers.

And a death that had been concealed behind a carefully rehearsed story about an accidental fall.

I looked at Gerald.

"Did Grace know?""

He nodded.

"She discovered the payments shortly before her death.""

I remembered her final lunch with me.

Have you ever looked at someone you love and suddenly felt like you don't know them anymore?

She had known.

She had known her marriage was a lie.

And she had still tried to save her baby.

Sheriff Brooks approached.

"Natalie, we need to take Lucas to the hospital for a full examination. After that, we'll discuss emergency guardianship arrangements.""

I nodded.

"Whatever he needs.""

My father approached slowly.

"Natalie.""

I looked at him.

He had tears running down his cheeks.

"I know you may never forgive me.""

I held Lucas against my shoulder.

"You should have told us.""

"I know.""

"You let Mom bury Grace without knowing her baby was alive.""

He lowered his head.

"I know.""

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I said:

"You don't get forgiveness today. You get a chance to tell the truth. All of it. And then you get to live with what you did.""

He nodded.

"I will.""

My mother stepped beside me.

She touched Lucas's tiny cheek.

"Your mommy fought so hard for you.""

I looked down at him.

The rain had stopped.

A thin line of sunlight appeared above the trees.

For the first time that day, I felt something other than grief.

Hope.

Not the kind that erased what happened.

The kind that gave us a reason to keep going.

Several months later, Travis was formally charged following the investigation into Grace's death, the forged financial documents, and the unauthorized medical records. Victor Hale and Dr. Whitmore faced separate investigations involving the clinic and the fraudulent embryo arrangement. The evidence recovered from Grace's home, the hospital, and the storage unit became central to the case.

Sloane provided investigators with her messages and financial records.

My father gave a full statement about the baby's transfer and accepted the legal consequences of his actions.

He never asked me to defend him.

My mother eventually allowed him to visit Lucas under supervision.

But their marriage was never the same.

As for Lucas, he came home with me.

I kept Grace's blue blanket beside his crib.

The same one she had knitted with uneven edges.

The same one she'd once photographed and sent to me with the message:

Look what I made for my little man.

On the day Lucas turned six months old, I took him to the Monroe family cottage.

I sat on the porch with him in my arms while the evening sunlight touched his face.

My phone buzzed.

It was an email from Gerald.

The subject line read:

*Final Personal Instruction from Grace Calloway.*

I opened it.

There was an attachment I'd never seen before.

A short video.

I pressed play.

Grace appeared on the screen, sitting in the nursery she'd prepared for Lucas.

Her hair was tied back.

She wore the yellow sweater I'd given her for Christmas.

Her hands rested gently over her stomach.

She smiled at the camera.

"Hi, Nat.""

I immediately began crying.

Grace laughed softly.

"I know you're probably going to yell at me for recording this instead of calling you.""

She looked down at her stomach.

"But I wanted to leave something for Lucas. Something he could watch when he gets older.""

She paused.

Then she looked directly into the camera.

"Sweetheart, if you're watching this, I hope you're surrounded by people who love you. I hope you know you were wanted from the very beginning.""

She smiled.

"And I hope Aunt Natalie hasn't spoiled you too much.""

I laughed through my tears.

Grace continued.

"There's one thing I want you to understand. Your life was never a business transaction. You were never somebody's property. You were never a payment, a promise, or a secret.""

She placed her hand over her stomach.

"You were my son.""

Then she looked at the camera again.

"And Nat, thank you for loving him when I couldn't be there.""

The video ended.

I held my phone against my chest.

Lucas stirred in my arms.

His little fingers reached toward my face.

I kissed his hand.

"Your mother loved you more than anything.""

The wind moved gently through the trees.

For a moment, I could almost hear Grace laughing on the porch beside me.

I had spent months wondering why Travis brought Sloane to my sister's funeral.

I finally understood.

He thought he could control the story.

He thought Grace's death would silence her.

He thought her family would grieve quietly while he collected the money, the property, and the life he'd planned for himself.

But he had forgotten one thing.

Grace had prepared for the day she could no longer speak.

She had left documents.

Recordings.

Photographs.

And a family that refused to stop asking questions.

The man who brought his mistress to his pregnant wife's funeral had expected to leave that church with everything.

Instead, he left with nothing but the truth waiting for him.

And the most important thing Grace left behind wasn't her money, her house, or the evidence that exposed him.

It was Lucas.

A little boy who would grow up knowing that his mother had fought for him until her very last breath.

I looked down at him.

"Happy half-birthday, sweetheart.""

He opened his eyes.

And I made him a promise.

"Nobody will ever use you again. Not for money. Not for power. Not for revenge.""

I tightened the blue blanket around him.

"You're going to grow up knowing exactly how loved you are.""

Because Grace had been silenced once.

May you like

But she had made sure her truth would never be buried with her.

And neither would her son.
