Chapter 5: The Mistress Who Knew Too Much
For a few seconds, neither of us moved.
Tessa stood in my bedroom holding the folder that contained the evidence Grant never wanted me to see.
I stood in the doorway, still gripping my phone, trying to understand the scene in front of me.
She wasn’t panicking.
She wasn’t apologizing.
She wasn’t even pretending she had a reason to be there.
She looked comfortable.
Almost relieved.
“I was wondering when you’d finally find out,” she repeated.
My fingers tightened around my phone.
“Find out what?””
Her smile faded slightly.
Not because she felt guilty.
Because she realized I wasn’t reacting the way she expected.
“You’re not angry.””
“I am.””
“Then why do you look like that?””
I stepped into the room.
“Like what?””
“Like you already knew.””
The irony almost made me laugh.
Because she was right.
I had spent months uncovering pieces of the truth.
But I had never expected this piece.
I had expected Grant to be the only person I needed to worry about.
I had been wrong.
“Tessa,” I said slowly, “why are you in my bedroom?””
She glanced down at the folder in her hands.
Then back at me.
“Because I needed to see if you had found it.””
My stomach tightened.
“Found what?””
She hesitated.
Only for a second.
But I noticed.
People always revealed more in their pauses than their words.
“You really don’t know everything.””
I walked closer.
“Then tell me.””
She looked toward the hallway.
“Is Grant home?””
“No.””
“Good.””
That answer bothered me more than if she had screamed.
Because it meant she had come prepared.
“You’re not here to steal anything,” I said.
“No.””
“Then what are you doing?””
Tessa placed the folder on the bed.
“I’m trying to protect myself.””
I stared at her.
The woman who had walked into my dining room and announced she would live in my house.
The woman who smiled while my children watched their family break apart.
Now she was telling me she was afraid.
I didn’t believe her.
Not yet.
“You expect me to feel sorry for you?””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
That surprised me.
“I know what I did.””
The room went quiet.
For the first time, she sounded human.
Not confident.
Not polished.
Just tired.
“I know I’m not the person you want to hear this from.””
“You’re right.””
She nodded.
“But I’m the only person who can tell you what Grant has been planning.””
I looked at the folder.
“Start talking.””
Tessa took a deep breath.
Then she sat on the edge of the bed.
I stayed standing.
I wasn’t ready to sit beside her.
Not even for the truth.
“Grant didn’t tell me everything,” she said.
I almost smiled.
“Of course he didn’t.””
“He told me you were basically separated.””
I said nothing.
“He said you stayed in the same house because of the children. He said your marriage had been over for years.””
I looked at her.
“And you believed him?””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
“I was stupid.””
“No.””
She looked up.
“I was selfish.””
That was different.
“And when did you realize he lied?””
Her fingers twisted together.
“When he brought me here.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“I thought he was going to tell you privately.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“You thought that?””
“Yes.””
She looked ashamed.
“I didn’t know he was planning to make it a public announcement.””
I remembered her standing beside him.
Her hand in his.
Her expression.
The way she looked at me.
“You seemed very comfortable.””
“I was pretending.””
“So was I.””
The words hung between us.
Two women who had been manipulated by the same person.
But not equally.
I would never forget what she had done.
Not because of Grant.
Because of my children.
“You hurt my kids.””
Her face changed.
“I know.””
“Owen looked at his father like he didn’t recognize him.””
“I know.””
“Lily asked if she was still part of our family.””
Tessa closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“I didn’t know.””
I believed that she was sorry.
But sorry did not erase damage.
“Keep going.””
She nodded.
“After I moved in, I started noticing things.””
“Like what?””
“The way Grant talked about you.””
I waited.
“He wasn’t angry.””
That surprised me.
“He wasn’t?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“He was afraid.””
I frowned.
“Afraid of me?””
“Afraid of losing control.””
The words landed harder than I expected.
Because they matched everything I had been feeling.
Tessa continued.
“He told me you were difficult.””
I almost laughed.
“Of course.””
“He said you were too independent.””
That made me pause.
Because that was not the insult most people expected.
“He said after you left your job, you became different.””
I looked away.
“He blamed me.””
“Yes.””
She swallowed.
“He said you had become suspicious. That you were always questioning him.””
I looked back.
“And?””
“And he said he needed to protect himself before you tried to take everything.””
The room went cold.
“He told you that?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“About six months ago.””
Six months.
The timing.
The affair.
The documents.
Everything was connecting.
“He was already planning this.””
Tessa nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at the folder.
“What is inside?””
“I don’t know everything.””
“You were looking through my documents.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I was looking for something else.””
“What?””
“Proof.””
I studied her face.
“Proof of what?””
“That he lied to me too.””
I didn’t answer.
Because part of me wanted to tell her she deserved it.
But another part understood something uncomfortable.
Grant’s cruelty was not limited to one person.
He didn’t just hurt people.
He controlled them.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Tessa looked at the floor.
“Two weeks ago, I found out he was still paying your household expenses.””
I frowned.
“Of course he was.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
“What?””
“He told me you were financially dependent on him because you couldn’t manage money.””
My jaw tightened.
“But the accounts?””
“He showed me accounts with your name removed.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What?””
“He said he had cleaned everything up.””
The phrase made my skin crawl.
Cleaned everything up.
Exactly what Vanessa had said.
“He told me he was moving assets because he didn’t trust you.””
I looked at the folder.
“He was preparing to take everything.””
“Yes.””
Silence.
Then I asked:
“Why are you telling me this now?””
Tessa looked directly at me.
“Because I found out what he planned to do after I moved in.””
“What?””
“He wanted you gone.””
I already knew that.
“No.””
Her voice dropped.
“He wanted everyone to believe you left willingly.””
My breathing stopped.
“What does that mean?””
She looked toward the folder.
“There’s a statement.””
“A statement?””
“He drafted something for you to sign.””
I opened the folder quickly.
Pages scattered across the bed.
Then I saw it.
A prepared declaration.
My hands went cold.
It said I was choosing to leave the marital home.
It said I had agreed to a separate living arrangement.
It said I had no dispute regarding the property.
It was written as if I had surrendered.
As if I had walked away.
As if Grant had done nothing wrong.
I looked at Tessa.
“He wanted me to sign this?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“After the agreement.””
I felt sick.
The postnuptial wasn’t the end.
It was only one step.
He wanted my signature everywhere.
He wanted a trail proving I had chosen this.
“Why didn’t you stop him?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I didn’t know how to.””
The answer was quiet.
“I thought I was getting a new life.””
She stood.
“Then I realized I was just another person he needed to control.””
I looked at her.
“You expect me to trust you?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I expect you not to trust me.””
That answer was the first thing she said all night that felt completely honest.
“Then why are you helping me?””
She walked toward the door.
“Because tomorrow morning, Grant is going to tell everyone you abandoned your marriage.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“He already scheduled a meeting.””
“With who?””
Her expression changed.
And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.
“His family.””
My heart sank.
“Evelyn?””
“And Caleb.””
She reached the doorway.
“He wants to control the story before you can tell yours.””
I looked at the documents.
At the woman who had once been my enemy.
At the evidence that showed Grant’s plan was bigger than I imagined.
Then Tessa said something that made me freeze.
“Rachel.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“He doesn’t know I found this.””
“Found what?””
She pointed at the folder.
“Not just the documents.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
She swallowed.
“The recording.””
I stared at her.
“What recording?””
Her face went pale.
“The one where Grant admits everything.””
And before I could ask another question, my phone buzzed.
A message from Vanessa.
I opened it.
May you like
Three words appeared on the screen.
*Grant knows.*
