Chapter 6: The Second Woman’s Secret
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Not Derek.
Not Linda.
Not the guests standing around the birthday cake.
Not even me.
Because sometimes the truth doesn’t arrive like an explosion.
Sometimes it arrives as a single sentence.
A sentence so simple that your mind needs a moment to understand how much it changes.
*“Why did you promise me the house would be mine?””*
Vanessa’s voice echoed through the room.
Derek stared at his phone like it had betrayed him.
Which was almost funny.
Because the phone was only revealing what he had done.
“Derek?”” Vanessa said through the speaker.
“Are you there?””
His hand shook.
“Vanessa, I…”
He stopped.
There were thirty people watching him.
And for once, he didn’t have an audience he could control.
“Who is this?”” Karen asked quietly.
Nobody answered.
They didn’t need to.
Everyone already knew.
The way Derek looked.
The way Linda looked.
The way my husband’s silence stretched longer than any confession.
I stepped closer.
“Derek.””
He looked at me.
I pointed toward the phone.
“Tell everyone.””
His face tightened.
“Emily, don’t do this.””
I almost smiled.
“Don’t do what?””
“Destroy everything.””
I stared at him.
The words were unbelievable.
Not because they were surprising.
Because they were exactly what he believed.
In his mind, I was the person destroying something.
Not the person discovering she had already been destroyed.
“You’re worried about everything falling apart?”” I asked.
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.””
I nodded slowly.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“I spent three years trying to hold everything together.””
My voice became quieter.
“And you spent three years deciding how to take it apart.””
Vanessa spoke again.
“Derek, what is happening?””
He quickly moved the phone away.
“I’ll call you later.””
“No.””
My voice stopped him.
He looked at me.
“Put it on speaker.””
His eyes widened.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“Emily—”
“Put it on speaker.””
He looked around the room.
He saw the guests.
He saw the recording evidence.
He saw the documents on the table.
And finally, he understood something.
He wasn’t negotiating anymore.
So slowly, with trembling fingers, he pressed the button.
Vanessa’s voice filled the room.
“Derek? What’s going on?””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at him.
“Answer her.””
He swallowed.
“Vanessa…”
A pause.
Then her voice changed.
“What happened?””
Interesting.
Not confusion.
Concern.
She knew something was wrong.
Derek looked at me.
“Can we talk privately?””
I laughed softly.
“No.””
His jaw tightened.
“Emily.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get private conversations anymore.””
Vanessa said:
“Derek, who is there?””
I answered before he could.
“His wife.””
Silence.
Complete silence.
Then:
“Emily?””
The way she said my name told me everything.
She knew exactly who I was.
My stomach tightened.
“How long have you known about me?””
No answer.
I looked at Derek.
Then back at the phone.
“How long?””
Vanessa breathed out.
“Derek told me you two were separated.””
A few guests gasped.
I looked at my husband.
“Separated?””
Derek immediately stepped forward.
“Emily, wait.””
I ignored him.
“Were we separated?””
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Because there was no version of the truth that saved him.
“No,” I said.
My voice was steady.
“We were married.””
Vanessa was quiet.
Then she whispered:
“He said you were only staying because of the house.””
My eyes moved to Derek.
There it was.
Another lie.
Another carefully designed story.
He hadn’t just lied to me.
He had created a different version of me for someone else.
A version where I was an obstacle.
A version where he was the victim.
Linda suddenly spoke.
“This is enough.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked exhausted.
Angry.
Embarrassed.
But not sorry.
“Everyone needs to leave.””
Nobody moved.
Linda raised her voice.
“I said leave.””
Karen looked at her.
“Linda…”
“No.””
She pointed toward the door.
“This is a private family matter.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Linda looked at me.
“What?””
“This stopped being private when you invited thirty people here to celebrate a lie.””
Her face flushed.
“You think you’re clever?””
“No.””
I looked at the cake.
“I think I’m finally awake.””
Derek walked toward me.
His voice lowered.
“Please.””
That word again.
Please.
The word he only used when consequences arrived.
“Emily, we can fix this.””
I stared at him.
“Fix what?””
“Our marriage.””
I looked at him for a long moment.
Then I asked:
“Do you even know what you’re apologizing for?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t.
He was sorry he got caught.
Not sorry he did it.
I turned away.
That was when Linda noticed the folder.
The one I had placed on the table earlier.
Her expression changed.
“What is that?””
I looked at her.
“Evidence.””
Her face hardened.
“Evidence of what?””
I opened the folder.
“Everything.””
Derek stepped closer.
“Emily.””
I pulled out the documents.
“You wanted me to sign over my rights.””
I placed the first page down.
“You convinced me this house belonged to the Mercer family.””
Another page.
“You planned to move Vanessa in.””
Derek’s face changed.
“Stop.””
I looked up.
“Why?””
“Because you don’t understand.””
I almost laughed.
“Then explain.””
He couldn’t.
Again.
He couldn’t.
I placed another document down.
“This is a copy of the messages between you and your mother.””
Linda’s eyes widened.
“What messages?””
I looked at her.
“The ones where you discussed making me believe I had no options.””
She reached for the papers.
I moved them away.
“Don’t.””
Her expression became angry.
“You have been spying on us?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I have been protecting myself.””
The difference mattered.
Sarah stepped into the room from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
I smiled slightly.
“Thank you for coming back.””
Derek looked confused.
“Sarah?””
She held up the phone.
“The recording is backed up.””
Derek’s face changed.
“What?””
Sarah looked at him.
“You should have been nicer to Emily.””
Nobody spoke.
Sarah walked over and handed me the phone.
“I saved everything.””
“Thank you.””
Derek looked between us.
“You planned all this?””
I looked at him.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I planned to leave.””
A pause.
“But then you grabbed me.””
The room became silent again.
“That changed something.””
Derek looked away.
Because he knew.
That was the moment he lost any chance of pretending this was only a disagreement.
His actions had exposed him.
Not just his words.
Not just his plans.
Him.
The real him.
Linda suddenly grabbed her purse.
“I’m done with this.””
She moved toward the door.
I watched her.
“Where are you going?””
She stopped.
“Home.””
I looked around the room.
Then back at her.
“This is your home.””
She looked confused.
“What?””
I smiled.
“The house you always said belonged to the Mercer family.””
Her face went still.
“Emily…”
“I think it’s time everyone knows something else.””
Derek looked at me.
“What are you talking about?””
I pulled out one final document.
The one I had been saving.
The one I knew would hurt them more than anything else.
I placed it on the table.
“This house was never just mine.””
Derek frowned.
“Then whose is it?””
I looked at Linda.
And watched the confidence leave her face.
“Your mother knows.””
Linda went pale.
Because she knew exactly what document I was holding.
The document that proved the biggest lie of all.
The secret she and Derek had hidden from everyone.
The secret that would explain why they were so desperate to control this house.
And when Derek saw the title at the top of the page…
His entire expression changed.
Because he finally understood.
May you like
The house they wanted so badly…
Was never theirs to take.
