Chapter 8: The Family Meeting From Hell

The emergency family meeting took place in the Moretti estate outside Chicago.

Vincent arrived at nine.

Sophia was already seated at the long dining table.

Ethan sat beside her.

Daniel Price was nowhere to be seen.

Two attorneys and three trustees occupied the opposite side.

At the center of the table lay a stack of legal documents.

Vincent removed his coat.

"Where is the amendment?""

Sophia pushed a folder toward him.

"Right here.""

He didn't touch it.

"Who prepared it?""

"Our attorneys.""

"Who requested it?""

"I did.""

Vincent looked at her.

"Why?""

Sophia sighed.

"Because the family needs stability.""

"Which family?""

She looked toward Ethan.

"Our family.""

Vincent pulled out a chair.

"Then explain why you're attempting to remove my biological children from the trust.""

Sophia's face hardened.

"Because they have no established relationship with this family.""

Vincent laughed once.

"You're talking about my children.""

"They were raised elsewhere.""

"Because you made sure they were.""

Sophia looked toward the trustees.

"Can we please keep this professional?""

Vincent opened the folder.

The first page contained the proposed amendment.

The second contained a list of beneficiaries.

The third contained a new ownership structure.

He turned to the last page.

Then he stopped.

"Who is M. Reynolds?""

Sophia went still.

Ethan looked at his mother.

"Mom?""

Sophia closed the folder.

"That's a private matter.""

Vincent leaned forward.

"Not anymore.""

One of the trustees cleared his throat.

"Mr. Moretti, perhaps we should address the proposed amendment before discussing additional family matters.""

Vincent turned.

"Do you know who M. Reynolds is?""

The trustee hesitated.

Then he looked at Sophia.

That was enough.

Vincent stood.

"Everyone in this room knows something I don't.""

Sophia rose too.

"You're making this impossible.""

"No. I'm asking questions.""

"You've been doing nothing but asking questions since Claire came back.""

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

"Leave Claire out of this.""

"Why? She's the reason we're here.""

"No. You're the reason we're here.""

Sophia's voice rose.

"I spent eighteen years building this family with you!""

"And you spent eighteen years hiding my children.""

She slapped her hand against the table.

"I protected Ethan!""

Vincent looked at his son.

Ethan had barely spoken.

His face was pale.

"Did you know?"" Vincent asked.

Ethan shook his head.

"Not until recently.""

Sophia turned sharply.

"Ethan, don't.""

He stood.

"Don't what? Tell the truth?""

Vincent looked at him.

"What did you find out?""

Ethan swallowed.

"Mom told me about Noah. Then Lily. But there's something else.""

Sophia's expression changed.

"Ethan.""

He ignored her.

"Last week, I found a box in her dressing room. It had photographs, birth certificates, and a letter from someone named Marcus.""

Vincent froze.

"Marcus Reynolds?""

Ethan nodded.

"Yes.""

Sophia closed her eyes.

Vincent turned toward her.

"Who is Marcus?""

She didn't answer.

Ethan continued.

"He's my mother's son.""

The room fell silent.

Vincent stared at Sophia.

"You have another child?""

Sophia's voice cracked.

"That was before you.""

"Before me?""

"Yes.""

"Where is he?""

Sophia looked toward the window.

"I don't know.""

Vincent stepped closer.

"How can you not know where your own son is?""

She finally shouted.

"Because I gave him away!""

The words echoed through the room.

Ethan looked at his mother.

Vincent slowly sat down.

"Tell me.""

Sophia pressed her hands against the table.

"Marcus was born when I was twenty-one. His father disappeared. My family insisted that having a child would ruin my future. They arranged for him to be adopted.""

"And you never looked for him?""

"I tried.""

"When?""

"Years later.""

Vincent shook his head.

"Why is his name in the trust amendment?""

Sophia looked down.

"Because I found him.""

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

"When?""

"Six months ago.""

"Where is he?""

"I don't know.""

"Stop lying.""

Sophia finally looked at him.

"He contacted me. He wanted money.""

Vincent laughed bitterly.

"Of course he did.""

"He threatened to expose everything.""

"And you put his name in a trust amendment?""

"I wanted to keep him quiet.""

Ethan stepped backward.

"Mom, what have you done?""

Sophia reached for him.

"Everything was for you.""

Ethan pulled away.

"No. You keep saying that, but every time someone asks you why you did something, you use me as an excuse.""

He picked up his jacket.

"I'm leaving.""

Sophia called after him.

"Ethan!""

He stopped at the doorway.

Then he said something that made her sit down.

"I don't know whether I'm your son or just another secret you decided to keep.""

He walked out.

Vincent stared at the open door.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then he turned toward the attorneys.

"Cancel the amendment.""

One of them spoke carefully.

"Mr. Moretti, the board has already been notified.""

"Then notify them again.""

"The trustees may challenge—"

Vincent leaned forward.

"Let them.""

He looked at Sophia.

"And preserve every document connected to Marcus Reynolds.""

Sophia's expression became desperate.

"Vincent, please.""

He turned away.

"Not another word.""

Meanwhile, Noah and I were waiting in Margaret's office when Ethan arrived.

He looked exhausted.

His expensive jacket was unbuttoned, his hair was disheveled, and he had dark circles beneath his eyes.

Noah stood.

"You're Ethan?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

They looked at each other.

For a moment, neither knew what to say.

Then Ethan gave a humorless laugh.

"This is weird.""

Noah nodded.

"Very.""

Ethan sat.

"I don't know where to start.""

"Try the beginning.""

Ethan placed a small envelope on the desk.

"I found this in my mother's dressing room.""

Margaret opened it.

Inside were three photographs.

The first showed Sophia holding a newborn baby.

The second showed a younger man standing outside a university building.

The third showed Sophia beside a man whose face had been partially covered by a black marker.

There was a handwritten note on the back.

*Marcus Reynolds. Birth mother: Sophia Reynolds. Adopted September 2008.*

I looked at Ethan.

"Why did you bring this to us?""

"Because I think my mother is lying about where he is.""

Margaret examined the photographs.

"Do you know the adoption agency?""

Ethan shook his head.

"But I found a receipt.""

He removed another paper.

It was from a private adoption consultancy.

The date was September 2008.

And the payment had been made through a Moretti Holdings subsidiary.

Margaret looked up.

"This wasn't a conventional adoption payment.""

"What do you mean?"" I asked.

"The company appears to have funded a private relocation arrangement.""

Noah leaned forward.

"Where was Marcus sent?""

Margaret studied the receipt.

"New York.""

Ethan nodded.

"That's what I thought.""

He removed his phone.

"I searched the name on the photograph. I found a social media account.""

He turned the screen around.

A young man stood beside a motorcycle.

His profile name was Marcus Reynolds.

Noah looked at the photograph.

"He looks like Sophia.""

Ethan nodded.

"Exactly.""

Margaret opened the profile.

There was a recent post.

A photograph of a man standing outside a building.

The caption read:

*Some families are built on blood. Others are built on lies. Tomorrow, I'm going to expose mine.*

I felt a chill.

"Tomorrow?""

Ethan nodded.

"He's coming to Chicago.""

Margaret looked at the date.

Then she checked the time.

"That's today.""

At three in the afternoon, Marcus Reynolds walked into the lobby of Moretti Holdings.

He wore a black jacket, carried a small backpack, and had a folder tucked under one arm.

The receptionist looked up.

"Good afternoon. Do you have an appointment?""

Marcus smiled.

"Tell Sophia Reynolds her firstborn son is here.""

The receptionist froze.

"Excuse me?""

"You heard me.""

Security approached.

Marcus raised his hands.

"I'm not here to cause trouble.""

But he was already recording on his phone.

Within minutes, Sophia appeared from the executive elevator.

Her face went white.

"Marcus.""

He smiled.

"Hello, Mother.""

She looked toward security.

"Take him outside.""

Marcus laughed.

"That's how you greeted me eighteen years ago. I was hoping you'd come up with something new.""

Sophia stepped closer.

"What do you want?""

"Answers.""

"I gave you everything you needed.""

"You gave me money.""

She lowered her voice.

"Not here.""

Marcus looked around the lobby.

"Why not? You've spent your entire life making sure nobody knows I exist. I think it's time people heard the truth.""

Sophia grabbed his arm.

"Come with me.""

He pulled away.

"Don't touch me.""

Her expression hardened.

"You're making a mistake.""

Marcus opened his folder.

"Then let's make it together.""

He removed a document and held it up.

"Do you recognize this?""

Sophia stared.

It was a copy of the original family trust.

The one she had tried to amend.

Marcus pointed to a clause near the bottom.

"There's a provision for biological descendants. And there's something you forgot.""

Sophia's lips parted.

He smiled.

"Your first child was never legally excluded from the Moretti family trust.""

She looked around.

Employees were watching.

Security had stopped moving.

Marcus leaned closer.

"And I know who helped you hide the others.""

Sophia's face changed.

"Who?""

Marcus looked toward the elevator.

"Your favorite assistant.""

At that exact moment, the elevator doors opened.

Daniel Price stepped out.

He saw Marcus.

Then Sophia.

And for the first time, the usually composed executive looked terrified.

That evening, all four young people ended up in the same room.

Noah.

Lily.

Ethan.

And Marcus.

Vincent had arranged the meeting in his private library.

He stood near the fireplace while the others sat around a large table.

I was beside Noah.

Margaret sat with Lily.

Ethan had barely looked at his mother since the afternoon.

Marcus sat opposite Vincent.

"Let's make this simple," Marcus said.

"I want my birth records, my original adoption file, and a complete accounting of every payment made in my name.""

Vincent nodded.

"You'll have them.""

Marcus looked surprised.

"Just like that?""

"Yes.""

"What about the money?""

"That's for you to decide after we establish what happened.""

Marcus leaned back.

"Interesting. I expected a fight.""

Vincent looked at him.

"I've spent eighteen years fighting the wrong people.""

Noah spoke quietly.

"Then perhaps you should start by listening.""

Vincent nodded.

"You're right.""

Lily looked at Marcus.

"Did you know about us?""

Marcus shook his head.

"No. I only discovered the Moretti connection six months ago.""

Ethan stared at him.

"So you didn't know you had three siblings?""

Marcus laughed softly.

"Apparently not.""

Noah looked at the four of them.

"Four children. Four different stories.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily reached into her bag.

"There is something my mother told me before she died.""

She placed an old photograph on the table.

It showed Sophia, Vincent, and a woman standing outside a hospital.

The woman was holding a baby.

I recognized her immediately.

Eleanor Brooks.

On the back, someone had written:

*September 21, 2008. The day we promised to keep the children safe.*

I frowned.

"That's impossible.""

Lily looked at me.

"Why?""

I pointed to the date.

"Because Marcus was supposedly adopted in September 2008. But this photograph was taken before his adoption was finalized.""

Margaret turned it over.

There was another handwritten sentence beneath the date.

*The first child was not the only child transferred that day.*

Vincent stared.

"What does that mean?""

Lily looked toward him.

"I don't know.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Maybe we should ask Daniel.""

Vincent's phone rang.

He checked the screen.

Daniel Price.

Vincent answered.

"Where are you?""

Daniel's voice was frantic.

"Mr. Moretti, you need to come to the office immediately.""

"Why?""

"Someone has accessed the original family registry.""

"Who?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he whispered:

"Your mother.""

Vincent froze.

His mother, Isabella Moretti, had been dead for eleven years.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel spoke faster.

"I know. But someone used her private authorization code to open the registry.""

Vincent stood.

"What did they access?""

Daniel's answer was almost inaudible.

May you like

"The fourth birth record.""

And then the call disconnected.
