Chapter 8: The Contract That Could Burn Them All

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

It landed on the floor between us.

But I couldn’t look away from it.

A younger version of my father.

A woman I had never seen before.

And me.

A child standing between them.

A child who apparently had been carrying a secret before she even knew what secrets were.

The man in black watched my reaction carefully.

Like he had been waiting for this exact moment.

“The original contract,” he repeated.

My voice came out quiet.

“What contract?””

Nobody answered.

Not Adrian.

Not my father.

Not Wendy.

That was when I knew.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

Again.

The anger came faster than the fear.

I turned toward my father.

“How many more secrets are there?””

His face tightened.

“Jessi—”

“No.””

I pointed at the photograph.

“You don’t get to explain this away.””

My father looked devastated.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“You keep saying that.””

My voice cracked.

“But every time you tried to protect me, you took away my choice.””

The words hit him.

Good.

Because they were true.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Jessica.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His expression was serious.

“The man in front of us is not here to explain.””

The intruder smiled.

“Smart.””

Adrian kept his eyes on him.

“He’s here to create chaos.””

“Chaos?””

The man laughed softly.

“No.””

He looked around the room.

“I’m here because the truth is finally worth more than the lies.””

Wendy crossed her arms.

“You always loved dramatic entrances.””

My head turned.

“You know him?””

The man looked at Wendy.

“She knows everyone.””

Wendy ignored him.

“Jessica, don’t listen to him.””

I almost laughed.

“You’re telling me who not to trust?””

Her face hardened.

“Yes.””

“After tonight?””

A flicker of anger crossed her expression.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

“No.””

I looked around the room.

“That’s the problem.””

I took a breath.

“Apparently everyone else does.””

The man in black smiled.

“Finally.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at him.

“You know my name.””

“I want to hear you say it.””

A pause.

Then:

“Marcus Hale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Adrian reacted.

Barely.

A small change in his expression.

Enough.

“You know him,” I said.

Adrian didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

Before Adrian could answer, Marcus spoke.

“Someone your father trusted.””

My father’s face changed.

“Trusted?””

Marcus laughed.

“Don’t pretend.””

“You betrayed me.””

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You betrayed yourself.””

The tension between them was immediate.

Personal.

Not business.

Not strangers.

History.

I looked at my father.

“What happened between you two?””

Nobody answered.

I stepped forward.

“I’m done asking nicely.””

The room went silent.

“I want every truth.””

My father looked at me.

And for the first time, he didn’t try to stop me.

Maybe he realized he couldn’t.

“Marcus worked with me.””

“Doing what?””

“Building the protection network.””

I frowned.

“The one you mentioned?””

“Yes.””

Marcus smiled.

“The one your father created after realizing powerful people could destroy anyone they wanted.””

“And you helped him?””

“I did.””

“Then why are you here?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because your father hid the contract from me.””

My father shook his head.

“Because you wanted to use it.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“I wanted to use it to stop them.””

“You wanted control.””

“And you didn’t?””

The accusation hung in the air.

Nobody moved.

Because it was true.

My father had created something powerful.

Something valuable.

Something everyone wanted.

Including him.

Including Wendy.

Including Adrian.

I looked at Adrian.

“And you?””

His eyes met mine.

“What about me?””

“What do you want from this?””

The question seemed to hit him harder than expected.

“I want the people responsible held accountable.””

“That’s not the same as saying you want nothing.””

A pause.

Then:

“No.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I do want something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Adrian looked at the photograph.

“I want the truth.””

That was not the answer I expected.

But I wasn’t sure I believed it.

Not completely.

A loud sound came from outside.

More vehicles.

More people.

Marcus looked toward the windows.

“They’re here.””

My father immediately understood.

“Wendy called them.””

Wendy smiled.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“I didn’t.””

My blood went cold.

“Then who?””

Nobody answered.

Then the lights shut off.

Again.

But this time, there was no panic.

Only realization.

Someone else had entered the game.

Adrian moved quickly.

“Everyone away from the windows.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Still giving orders.””

“Still ignoring them?””

Marcus smiled.

“Some things never change.””

A second later, glass shattered.

Adrian pulled me down.

My father moved beside me.

The sound of footsteps filled the house.

Not one person.

Several.

I could hear them moving.

Organized.

Professional.

Not like Wendy’s security.

Different.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“Your enemies are not coming for the contract.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What are they coming for?””

Marcus looked at me.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

My father stepped in front of me.

“No.””

Marcus’s expression became serious.

“They’re coming for her.””

I hated that sentence.

Again.

Everyone wanted me.

Nobody saw me.

Only what I represented.

My inheritance.

My shares.

My connection.

The contract.

I pushed myself up.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I’m not a file.””

Silence.

“I’m not a contract.””

My voice grew stronger.

“I’m not a company.””

I looked at all of them.

“I’m a person.””

Nobody spoke.

Good.

They needed to hear it.

“I want the truth.””

My father looked at me.

“You deserve it.””

“Then give it.””

He took a slow breath.

“The contract isn’t a business agreement.””

I waited.

“It’s a succession agreement.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your eighteen percent ownership isn’t the important part.””

“What is?””

My father looked at me.

“Your authority.””

I didn’t understand.

“Over what?””

He looked at the photograph.

“Over the entire protection network.””

My breath stopped.

“What?””

“When your mother died, I transferred legal control into a structure connected to you.””

I stared.

“My mother?””

The room changed.

Because my mother was another wound.

One nobody talked about.

“My mother was involved?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

My father looked devastated.

“She helped create it.””

I felt dizzy.

My entire family history was suddenly something I didn’t recognize.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because the people hunting us believed the contract was destroyed.””

“And if they knew I had it?””

“They would control you.””

I looked around.

“They already tried.””

Nobody argued.

Because they knew.

Wendy tried marriage.

Others tried force.

Everyone had a different method.

But the goal was the same.

Control me.

Marcus stepped forward.

“The contract has one condition.””

My father looked at him.

“Marcus.””

“What?””

I turned.

“What condition?””

Marcus looked at me.

“The person who controls the network must make a choice.””

“What choice?””

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out another document.

And held it toward me.

“Destroy it.””

A pause.

“Or activate it.””

I stared.

“What happens if I activate it?””

Marcus’s expression turned serious.

“Every hidden account, every secret agreement, every person involved in the corruption becomes exposed.””

My heart raced.

“And if I destroy it?””

“Everything disappears.””

The weight of the decision hit me.

Because this wasn’t about revenge.

It wasn’t about money.

It was about power.

A dangerous amount of power.

My father stepped closer.

“Jessi, you don’t have to do this.””

I looked at him.

“You mean I don’t have to choose?””

“Yes.””

But I shook my head.

“That’s exactly what everyone keeps saying.””

I picked up the document.

“Don’t choose.””

My eyes moved across the room.

“Don’t know.””

“Don’t fight.””

“Don’t question.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“I’m done being protected.””

A sound came from the hallway.

A slow clap.

Everyone froze.

A new voice spoke.

“Beautiful.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew that voice.

Luca Vance.

He stepped out of the darkness.

But he wasn’t alone.

Behind him stood armed men.

And beside him—

Wendy.

I looked at her.

“You were working with him.””

She didn’t answer.

Luca smiled.

“Jessica, you always were smarter than Wendy gave you credit for.””

I stared at him.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about everything?””

“Not everything.””

He looked at the document in my hand.

“But I knew enough.””

Adrian moved slightly.

Luca noticed.

“Careful, Adrian.””

He smiled.

“You don’t want to make the same mistake Daniel made.””

My father went still.

“What does that mean?””

Luca looked at him.

“It means your daughter deserves to know the truth.””

My fingers tightened.

“What truth?””

Luca smiled.

The same kind of smile he wore at the dinner table.

The smile of a man who thought he had already won.

“Your father didn’t hide the contract to protect you.””

A pause.

“He hid it because he knew you were the only person who could expose him.””

The room went silent.

I looked at my father.

May you like

And for the first time...

He looked afraid of my answer.
