Chapter 4: The Secret Behind His Success
The message from Harrison stayed open on my phone for several seconds.
I read it once.
Then again.
Then a third time, hoping the words would somehow rearrange themselves into something less painful.
They didn’t.
*“Daniel’s promotion was not approved based on performance alone. There were financial irregularities discovered during the final review.””*
My fingers tightened around the phone.
Financial irregularities.
Those were words people used when they wanted to avoid saying something worse.
Fraud.
Misuse of funds.
Dishonesty.
I looked through the glass wall of the conference room.
Daniel was standing near the hallway, speaking quietly with Vanessa.
Six years.
Six years of watching him work late.
Six years of hearing him complain about unfair treatment.
Six years of believing his ambition was driven by determination.
But now I had to ask myself a question I never wanted to ask.
How much of Daniel’s success had been real?
Harrison approached carefully.
“Claire.””
I looked up.
“What exactly did you find?””
His expression remained serious.
“The internal audit team flagged several transactions connected to Daniel’s division.””
“What kind of transactions?””
“Vendor contracts.””
My stomach tightened.
“Explain.””
Harrison glanced toward the conference room.
“Several logistics suppliers received unusually favorable agreements. The pricing structures benefited them more than Vantage Meridian.””
“And Daniel approved them?””
“Yes.””
“Was there proof he personally gained from them?””
“Not directly.””
I exhaled slowly.
Not directly.
That phrase mattered.
Because Daniel had always been careful.
He wasn’t careless.
He was calculated.
“What does Vanessa have to do with this?”” I asked.
Harrison hesitated.
That hesitation told me more than his words could have.
“Claire.””
“What?””
“You should hear this from me before you hear it from someone else.””
I waited.
“Vanessa’s brother owns one of those suppliers.””
The hallway suddenly felt colder.
I looked toward Vanessa.
Her silver gown from last night was gone.
Today she wore a perfectly tailored business suit.
But the confidence remained.
She wasn’t just Daniel’s assistant.
She was connected.
“Does Daniel know?”” I asked.
“We believe so.””
I closed my eyes briefly.
The pain wasn’t sharp anymore.
It was something heavier.
A realization.
Daniel didn’t just choose Vanessa because she understood his world.
He chose someone who could help him create one.
“Bring me everything,” I said.
Harrison nodded.
“The board has already prepared the documents.””
I entered the conference room.
The atmosphere changed immediately.
Everyone stood straighter.
Not because I demanded respect.
Because they finally understood why I had been kept in the shadows.
The room was filled with executives who had known me for years.
But most had never met me.
Not really.
At the head of the table sat the Vantage Meridian board members.
Daniel walked in moments later.
His eyes stayed on me.
Not with anger this time.
With confusion.
He sat across from me.
“This is absurd.””
No greeting.
No apology.
Straight to defense.
I placed my phone on the table.
“What is?””
“You removing me from my position.””
The room became silent.
A board member looked at him.
“Mr. Mercer, this meeting is not about punishment.””
Daniel laughed.
“Of course it is.””
He pointed toward me.
“This is personal.””
I looked at him calmly.
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
His voice rose.
“My wife gets angry because I ended our marriage, then suddenly I lose my job?””
Several people exchanged looks.
Daniel saw it.
He used that.
He leaned back.
“She’s emotional. Everyone here needs to consider that.””
I almost admired his confidence.
Almost.
Even now.
Even after everything.
He still believed he could control the story.
Harrison opened a folder.
“Mr. Mercer, this meeting concerns business decisions made under your authority.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I was promoted because of my results.””
“Your promotion is under review.””
“Why?””
Harrison slid a document across the table.
Daniel glanced down.
The color slowly disappeared from his face.
“What is this?””
“You know exactly what it is.””
“No.””
His voice changed.
Less confident.
More careful.
“This is a misunderstanding.””
I watched him.
There it was.
The first crack.
The first moment Daniel realized charm would not be enough.
A board member spoke.
“Several contracts approved by your department show irregular patterns.””
Daniel immediately looked at me.
“You did this.””
I didn’t move.
“I discovered it.””
“You’re trying to destroy me.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“I’m trying to understand who I married.””
That sentence affected him more than any accusation.
For a moment, Daniel looked hurt.
Real hurt.
Then it disappeared.
Because pride won.
“You’re unbelievable.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because you think you’re better than me.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Then what is this?””
“This is accountability.””
He laughed.
“Accountability?””
“Yes.””
“You’re sitting there with your family’s money and power acting like you earned everything.””
The room went silent.
I looked around the table.
Then back at him.
“That’s interesting.””
“What?””
“You always hated that my grandfather built something.””
Daniel frowned.
“I never said that.””
“You didn’t have to.””
I leaned forward.
“You spent years telling people I was lucky.””
His face tightened.
“Because you were.””
The words came out before he could stop them.
There it was.
The truth.
Not hidden.
Not disguised.
Just spoken.
I nodded slowly.
“Thank you.””
He looked confused.
“For what?””
“For finally saying it.””
Daniel stared at me.
“I’m not apologizing for being ambitious.””
“I never asked you to.””
“Then what do you want?””
I looked at him.
The question surprised me.
Because I realized I didn’t want revenge.
Not really.
I wanted him to understand.
“I wanted my husband to be proud of me.””
His expression changed.
A small movement.
Almost invisible.
“I was.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were proud of what I provided.””
“That’s not true.””
“Daniel.””
I lowered my voice.
“Last night, you said Vanessa understood the life you were building.””
He looked away.
“You never once asked if I wanted to build that life with you.””
Nobody spoke.
The silence was uncomfortable.
But necessary.
Then Vanessa entered the room.
She had been waiting outside.
“Daniel.””
Everyone turned.
She looked nervous.
Actually nervous.
That was new.
“Can we talk?””
Daniel stood.
“Not now.””
“No, we need to.””
Her eyes moved toward the documents on the table.
Then back to him.
“Did they find out?””
Those four words changed everything.
The room froze.
Daniel turned slowly.
“Vanessa.””
But it was too late.
Everyone heard.
“What did you mean by that?”” one board member asked.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“I meant…”
She stopped.
Daniel looked furious.
“Leave.””
She stared at him.
“You promised me this wouldn’t happen.””
My heart stopped.
Promised?
This wasn’t just an affair.
It was a plan.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Not here.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“After everything I did for you?””
The room became painfully quiet.
I watched Daniel’s expression.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Not of losing his job.
Of losing control.
“What did you do?”” I asked.
Neither of them answered.
That was answer enough.
Harrison stepped forward.
“Ms. Cole, I suggest you choose your next words carefully.””
Vanessa looked at me.
And something in her expression changed.
She wasn’t looking at me like I was weak anymore.
She was looking at me like she finally understood the danger.
“Claire,” she said softly.
I hated how calm she sounded.
“I think there’s something you should know about your husband.””
Daniel immediately interrupted.
“Vanessa, don’t.””
But she kept going.
“Because he wasn’t planning to leave you last night.””
My heart slowed.
“What?””
She looked directly at me.
“He was planning to take everything from you first.””
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Daniel’s face turned cold.
“Don’t say another word.””
Vanessa smiled sadly.
May you like
Then she spoke the sentence that changed everything.
“Claire… ask your husband why he needed you to sign those papers three weeks ago.””
