Chapter 2

The bank called me at 9:07.

I was sitting on Nora’s couch with an ice pack against my jaw.

My wrist throbbed inside the brace.

My daughter fluttered under my ribs like she was reminding me not to disappear.

The caller ID showed First Texas Trust.

My stomach tightened.

I answered.

“This is Amelia Carter.”

A calm woman said, “Mrs. Carter, this is Denise from the fraud department. We have an attempted withdrawal on the monitored account.”

I closed my eyes.

“Diane?”

“A woman identifying herself as Diane Carter is at the Preston Road branch with your husband.”

My heart did not drop.

It hardened.

“How much?”

“Ninety-two thousand dollars.”

I laughed once.

No humor.

“She added fees.”

Denise’s voice remained professional.

“She presented a notarized authorization letter allegedly signed by you.”

My hand went cold.

“I signed nothing.”

“We know. The alert is active. Branch security has been notified. Police are being contacted.”

Nora stood from the kitchen table.

“What happened?”

I put the phone on speaker.

Denise continued.

“Mrs. Carter, the document also includes a medical claim that you are emotionally unstable due to pregnancy and have authorized your husband to manage funds.”

Nora’s face went pale.

I touched my stomach.

Ethan had slapped me because I said no.

Then forged papers saying I was unstable.

Not even a full day later.

“How long do I have?” I asked.

“Police are arriving now. We recommend you stay available for a statement.”

I heard muffled voices through the phone.

Then a shout.

Diane.

Even through a bank line, I knew her shriek.

“This is my son’s money!”

Another voice.

Ethan.

“My wife is confused. She’s pregnant. She doesn’t understand finances.”

My mouth filled with the taste of blood again.

Denise said quietly, “Mrs. Carter, would you like to authorize the branch manager to share your recorded emergency statement with law enforcement?”

“Yes.”

“And the hospital documentation?”

“Yes.”

“And the video file your attorney forwarded?”

I froze.

“My attorney?”

Nora looked at me.

I hadn’t called one yet.

Denise said, “A Ms. Priya Shah contacted our legal office at 8:52 with preserved evidence.”

Nora’s expression softened.

“I called Priya while you were sleeping,” she whispered.

Priya Shah had been our friend in college.

Now she was a family law attorney with a reputation for making arrogant men regret paper trails.

I started crying.

Nora sat beside me.

“You needed an army,” she said. “I called the first soldier.”

At 9:19, Diane was detained inside the bank lobby.

At 9:26, Ethan called me.

I let it ring.

Then he texted.

What did you do?

Then:

Mom is crying.

Then:

You’re destroying this family over money.

I stared at the screen.

Money.

He still thought this was about money.

At 9:41, Priya called.

Her voice was sharp and warm at once.

“Amelia, I need you to listen carefully.”

“I’m listening.”

“They forged your signature. They also brought a letter from a doctor claiming you were incompetent.”

“What doctor?”

“Dr. Howard Lane.”

My stomach twisted.

“That’s Diane’s cousin.”

“I know. He signed a statement saying pregnancy hormones have impaired your judgment.”

Nora cursed under her breath.

Priya continued.

“I’m filing an emergency protective order. I’m also requesting exclusive use of the marital home if you want it.”

I looked around Nora’s apartment.

Safe.

Small.

Temporary.

Then I thought of the nursery.

The pale green walls I painted myself.

The crib my father built before he died.

The box of my mother’s baby blankets in the closet.

“Yes,” I said. “I want my home.”

“Good.”

Another call came in.

Unknown number.

I ignored it.

A voicemail appeared seconds later.

Diane’s voice.

Low.

Furious.

“You ungrateful little parasite. I should have known you’d use that baby to turn my son against me.”

My hand moved to my stomach.

The voicemail continued.

“But you made one mistake, Amelia. You forgot whose name is on your medical emergency forms.”

My blood turned cold.

Ethan.

May you like

He was still listed as my emergency contact.

And Diane knew my hospital.
