Chapter 6: The Letter Hidden Behind His Name
Nobody spoke after Megan finished.
Not a single person.
The kind of silence that comes after a glass shatters and everyone is waiting to see who will move first.
I looked at Megan.
Then Diane.
Then Ethan.
“My father didn’t die by accident?””
The words barely left my mouth.
Megan looked down.
“I shouldn’t have said it like that.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“You should have said it exactly like that.””
Diane stepped forward.
“Megan, this conversation is over.””
“No, Mom.””
The firmness in her voice surprised everyone.
Especially Diane.
“You’ve been saying that my whole life.””
Diane’s expression hardened.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
Megan laughed bitterly.
“Tell the truth?””
The room changed.
Not because Diane became less powerful.
Because for the first time, someone stopped being afraid of her.
I looked at Ethan.
He looked completely lost.
“Laura,” he said softly.
I turned toward him.
“Did you know?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
But this time, I wasn’t looking for his words.
I was looking for the reaction behind them.
Shock.
Confusion.
Fear.
He looked like someone discovering a secret, not someone hiding one.
Megan noticed too.
“Ethan really didn’t know.””
I looked at her.
“You’re sure?””
She nodded.
“Mom kept most of this away from him.””
Diane stared at her daughter.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Megan looked at her.
“I know more than you think.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
Because yesterday, Megan had been sitting at my table drinking from my mug.
She had defended her mother.
She had told me I was making things difficult.
And now she was standing in front of everyone, shaking.
“What happened to my father?””
I asked.
Nobody answered.
So I asked again.
“What happened?””
Megan looked at Diane.
Then at me.
“Your father had a second family.””
The words were simple.
But they opened a door I never knew existed.
I sat down slowly.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
Megan swallowed.
“That’s what you were told.””
I stared at her.
“Who told me?””
She didn’t answer.
I already knew.
Everyone had.
My father was the man who worked too much.
The man who loved old jazz records and hated wasting money.
The man who taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who died suddenly on a business trip when I was twenty-three.
That was the story.
The only story.
“You’re saying he had another daughter?””
Megan nodded.
“Emily.””
The name sounded different now.
Not like a stranger.
Like a missing piece.
“How did you find her?””
Megan looked uncomfortable.
“Mom found her first.””
I turned toward Diane.
“Why?””
Diane’s jaw tightened.
“Because she contacted us.””
“Why?””
“She wanted answers.””
“About my father?””
“Yes.””
“And you helped her?””
Diane said nothing.
Megan answered.
“Mom thought Emily might know about the inheritance.””
There it was.
The word again.
Inheritance.
I looked at the laptop.
The email.
The documents.
The hidden conversations.
Everything suddenly connected.
“You knew about this before I came home.””
Diane didn’t deny it.
“We were trying to handle it.””
“We?””
She looked away.
“Yes.””
“Who is we?””
Nobody spoke.
Then I looked at Ethan.
The question formed before I asked it.
“Were you involved?””
His face changed immediately.
“No.””
The answer was fast.
Almost desperate.
“No, Laura. I swear.””
I studied him.
“You knew about the ownership transfer.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about the paperwork.””
“Yes.””
“But you didn’t know about Emily?””
“No.””
He looked genuinely hurt.
“I didn’t know.””
I wanted to believe him.
That was the worst part.
Because even after everything, some piece of me still wanted to.
I turned back to Megan.
“Why did Emily contact Diane?””
Megan hesitated.
“Because she thought Diane had access to documents.””
“What documents?””
“Your father’s estate records.””
My heart beat faster.
“What does my father’s estate have to do with my house?””
Megan looked at Diane.
And Diane looked away.
That was enough.
I stood.
“My house.””
Nobody answered.
“The paperwork.””
Still nothing.
“The attempt to remove my name.””
I looked at Diane.
“Was that because of the inheritance?””
Her silence was confirmation.
Ethan looked at his mother.
“Mom?””
Diane finally spoke.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I really don’t.””
Her voice became defensive.
“Your father left assets.””
“What assets?””
“That doesn’t matter.””
“It matters to me.””
“Laura—”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You spent months discussing my life with people behind my back.””
I pointed toward the papers.
“You tried to change ownership of my home.””
I looked around the kitchen.
“And now I find out my father left something valuable enough that everyone suddenly cares about me?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Diane said something I never expected.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I stared at her.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“By removing my name from my house?””
“By preventing Emily from taking advantage of you.””
The sentence stopped me.
“Emily.””
Diane nodded.
“She came looking for money.””
Megan shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
Diane looked at her daughter.
“Stay out of this.””
“No.””
Megan stepped forward.
“She didn’t come for money.””
“How would you know?””
“Because I talked to her.””
Everyone froze.
Diane’s face went pale.
“You what?””
“I talked to her.””
Megan looked at me.
“She didn’t want your money.””
“Then what did she want?””
Megan’s eyes filled with guilt.
“The truth.””
I looked down.
The truth.
Everyone wanted to use that word.
But nobody wanted to give it.
“Where is she?””
Nobody moved.
I looked at Diane.
“Where is Emily?””
“She left.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
That answer came too quickly.
I narrowed my eyes.
“You’re lying.””
“I am not.””
“You know where she is.””
“No.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
Diane looked at me.
And for once, she didn’t have a response.
My phone rang.
Everyone jumped.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
My heart started beating faster.
Somehow, I knew.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For a few seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a woman spoke.
“Laura?””
I froze.
The voice was unfamiliar.
But something about it felt strange.
Like hearing an echo of someone you had never met.
“Yes?””
“I’m sorry.””
My grip tightened.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Emily.””
Nobody in the room moved.
Diane’s face changed instantly.
Megan covered her mouth.
Ethan looked between us.
And I whispered:
“How did you get my number?””
Her voice trembled.
“Because I found the records.””
“What records?””
“The ones your father hid.””
My stomach dropped.
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
Then she said:
“I’m outside your house.””
I turned toward the window.
The street was empty.
Dark.
Quiet.
“No one is outside.””
Emily’s breathing became shaky.
“Laura…”
“What?””
“The house you’re standing in…”
Her voice broke.
“It was never just your father’s house.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Then she said the sentence that changed everything.
“The reason Diane is trying to take control of it…”
A pause.
“She knows what’s hidden underneath it.””
I looked around the room.
The walls.
The floors.
The place I thought I knew.
“What’s hidden?””
Emily whispered:
“The proof that your father was murdered.””
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
Then slowly looked down.
At the hardwood floor.
The same floor where I had dragged my first bookshelf.
The same floor Diane had walked across like she owned it.
And suddenly, I wondered what else this house had been keeping from me.
Because if Emily was telling the truth…
May you like
The biggest secret wasn’t who owned my home.
It was what my home had been hiding all these years.
