Chapter 6

Martin Vale did not raise his voice.

That made him more frightening than Bradley.

Bradley was sloppy cruelty.

Martin was practiced power.

He descended the stairs slowly, one hand on the railing, eyes moving over me like I was a scratch on expensive furniture.

“You caused quite a problem, Chloe.”

“You mean when your son grabbed me?”

“I mean when you made it public.”

Rick stepped closer.

“This ends when the child walks out.”

Martin looked at him.

“This ends when you forget what you think you know.”

Detective Torres’s voice crackled softly in my hidden earpiece.

Keep him talking.

I forced myself to breathe.

“What does Rick know?”

Martin’s smile widened.

“Rick knows how moral men become useful. Don’t you, Rick?”

Rick said nothing.

Martin turned to me.

“Years ago, Mr. Dawson was internal affairs. Noble work. Then he discovered a network of police, club owners, and city officials moving cash through bars like his.”

My eyes flicked to Rick.

His face stayed still.

“He tried to testify,” Martin continued. “Then evidence vanished. Witnesses changed stories. Careers ended.”

“And now?” I asked.

“Now he has records again. Which makes him irritating.”

Rick’s voice was flat.

“You had Bradley assault Chloe so you could pressure me.”

“Bradley improvises badly,” Martin said. “But yes, he served a purpose.”

The wire caught it.

I prayed it caught it.

A faint sound came from upstairs.

A child crying.

My heart lurched.

“Sophie,” I whispered.

Eddie moved to block the stairs.

I stepped forward anyway.

He grabbed my arm.

Same wrist Bradley had bruised.

Pain shot through me.

Something inside me snapped.

I drove my knee into his thigh and shoved him backward into a stack of crates.

He stumbled, furious.

Rick moved between us.

Martin lifted one hand.

“Enough.”

Eddie froze.

That power.

That ownership.

It made my skin crawl.

Martin looked at me with mild amusement.

“You really are a fighter.”

“No,” I said. “I’m tired.”

For the first time, his smile faded.

Tired people are dangerous.

We have less performance left.

Rick glanced toward the upstairs office.

“You want my testimony gone? Fine. Let Sophie go.”

“No,” Martin said. “You misunderstand. I don’t want your testimony gone. I want it broken.”

He nodded at Eddie.

Eddie picked up a folder and threw it at my feet.

Photos spilled out.

Me behind the bar.

Me at my apartment.

Maya leaving school.

Devin with Sophie.

Rick meeting Detective Torres.

Martin’s voice stayed calm.

“You will all sign statements. Chloe admits she attacked Bradley and planted drugs to frame him. Devin admits Rick forced him to plant evidence. Rick admits his testimony against me was retaliation.”

Rick laughed once.

“You think anyone believes that?”

Martin reached into his pocket and pulled out a small pink hair bow.

My stomach dropped.

He held it up.

“People believe what fear signs.”

From upstairs, Sophie cried louder.

I moved before I thought.

Rick grabbed me back.

“Chloe.”

Then the warehouse door exploded open.

“Federal agents!”

Lights flooded the room.

Men shouted.

Eddie reached for his gun.

I grabbed the nearest bottle from a crate and hurled it at his hand.

It shattered against the railing.

He dropped the weapon.

Agents swarmed in.

Martin did not run.

He simply lifted his hands and smiled.

“You’re making a mistake.”

Detective Torres walked in behind them.

“No,” she said. “We heard everything.”

Martin’s eyes moved to me.

To my shirt.

May you like

To the wire.

For the first time, his face went pale.
